Whale-watching season
Every winter residents and tourists on the Sunshine Coast flock to vantage points with the best ocean views, fill up boats, and jump into the water, all looking for the same thing. Something exciting is bubbling beneath the surface of the ocean, given away by a blackfin, or a spout of warm air bursting upwards from the water.
Winter is an exciting time on the Sunshine Coast, as it marks the beginning of the whale-watching season. Every year, thousands of humpback whales depart from Antarctica in favour of the warm waters of Queensland, before heading back again. This is because the sheltered water of the Queensland coastline is the perfect temperature for breeding.
We’re expecting a total of around 22,000 whales this year, and they have already started arriving. Humpback whales can be spotted in the waters of the Sunshine Coast from May through to November; however, the best time to see them is during the mating season which runs from July to October.
The Sunshine Coast is one of the best whale-watching destinations in Australia, and the humpbacks are a sight not to be missed. It’s a breathtaking show for those lucky enough to see it, as the whales slap and lob their tails into the water, and perform full-body breaches.
