It’s whale watching season on the Sunshine Coast

Whale Watching Sunshine Coast

Whale-watching season

Every winter residents and tourists on the Sunshine Coast flock to vantage points with the best ocean views, fill up boats, and jump into the water, all looking for the same thing. Something exciting is bubbling beneath the surface of the ocean, given away by a blackfin, or a spout of warm air bursting upwards from the water.

Winter is an exciting time on the Sunshine Coast, as it marks the beginning of the whale-watching season. Every year, thousands of humpback whales depart from Antarctica in favour of the warm waters of Queensland, before heading back again. This is because the sheltered water of the Queensland coastline is the perfect temperature for breeding.

We’re expecting a total of around 22,000 whales this year, and they have already started arriving. Humpback whales can be spotted in the waters of the Sunshine Coast from May through to November; however, the best time to see them is during the mating season which runs from July to October.

The Sunshine Coast is one of the best whale-watching destinations in Australia, and the humpbacks are a sight not to be missed. It’s a breathtaking show for those lucky enough to see it, as the whales slap and lob their tails into the water, and perform full-body breaches.

Noosa Oceanrider Day Tour

Some of our favourite spots to enjoy the exciting spectacle along the Sunshine Coast include:

  • Dolphin Point in Noosa National Park
  • Point Perry in Coolum
  • Point Arkwright in Coolum
  • Alexandra Headland
  • Moffat Headland in Moffat Beach
  • Point Cartwright in Kawana

Whilst it’s thrilling to watch the whales from the idyllic coastline, many people want to get a closer look at these fascinating creatures, and we can’t blame you. Fortunately, COVID 19 tourism restrictions have eased on the Sunshine Coast and whale watching cruises are currently available.

If the boat still isn’t close enough for you, you’ll be pleased to know that the Sunshine Coast is pleased to offer a rare and special opportunity to swim alongside humpback whales. This is an amazing opportunity that you will remember for the rest of your life.

With domestic travel coronavirus restrictions easing, most Australians are now allowed to visit the Sunshine Coast and observe the majestic humpback whales. Restaurants, accommodation, and attractions are open to provide everything you need for the perfect whale-watching holiday. The Sunshine Coast and the humpback whales are ready and waiting to welcome you and our good partner Ocean Rider is the perfect choice when booking a whale watching tour.
